Coast Hearing Services is known for our outstanding customer service and we strive to help all of our clients hear better with the best products available on the market. Our goal is to provide you the best possible hearing care, based upon your individual needs. We provide a comprehensive array of services related to evaluation, rehabilitation and prevention of hearing impairment. These services include comprehensive hearing evaluations, specialized diagnostic testing, and industrial hearing screenings.
Since a hearing aid cannot be prescribed like eye glasses, proper hearing aid recommendation and fitting is highly dependent on the judgment and skill of the professional selecting the instrument. We test your hearing, select and dispense the hearing instrument best to meet your needs, in addition to providing support, counseling and service of the hearing system. We are concerned about the person and make hearing solution recommendations to fit your lifestlye and personal needs.
Below is an informational letter a pleased client of Coast Hearing Services. He took the time to put together these words for new hearing aid users based on his own experiences with hearing aids and our office.
"I have worn hearing aids for over 50 years. As a result of having good hearing aid products, correctly fitted and maintained I have been very successful in a number of occupations that required me to hear people speaking. Education and work experience have given me an extensive understanding of hearing aids and their use. I am writing this for two reasons: first, to share some of my experiences to help others; and second, to support one of the best hearing aid dispensers I have ever known: Jeff Gardner, Coast Hearing Services, Newport, Oregon.
Testing
A good hearing test is critical for good fitting. It needs to include both pure tone and verbal tests. The latter are very important to determining the full impact of hearing loss. The inability to hear different kinds of sounds is actually what makes a hearing loss so frustrating to many. While the measurement of threshold hearing at various frequencies gives a broad picture of the loss, a good audiologist can refine the nature of the loss by knowing what word sounds are not perceived (heard).
Prep Yourself
Having had your hearing test, it will be worth the time to take a few minutes and think about the situations in which you have the most difficulty hearing. Try to picture them in your mind and picture what the conditions are in the space around you. Ask family and friends what they notice about your hearing loss. Make notes so you can tell the hearing aid fitter about the conditions. This information becomes very valuable when customizing the various capabilities of your hearing aids.
The Magic Moment
Putting on a new aid or aids can be exciting and frustrating. Some sounds will be sharper, clearer and other sounds may be too loud. Now is when the skilled, understanding fitter begins to work. With your aid(s) connected to a computer the master fitter starts sculpting the circuitry to conform to your hearing needs and desires. Be patient, work with the fitter and be willing to try some new hearing abilities that might even seem a bit uncomfortable at first. It is important that you become familiar and comfortable with all of the adjustment’s you can make. Use them and find what works well and what needs further adjustment. When talking with your fitter be as detailed as possible, give good, full description of what sounds you hear and what they sound like. The more verbal feedback you provide, the more precisely the aids can be adjusted.
Be patient, it can take several to many visits stretched over weeks to get your hearing aids adjusted so they give you the maximum possible benefits. When I got new aids in 2010, I worked with Jeff Gardiner of Newport’s Coast Hearing Services for over three months to refine the aids’ 5 programs to meet my needs. While I brought my knowledge and experience to the job, it was Jeff’s almost uncanny ability to adjust the computer driven settings to make my hearing aids deliver the sound I needed under the conditions that I experience in everyday life. I found that I needed to revisit after several months to get small adjustments made, and when I got the programming set it has given me the best hearing capability I have had in years. Now a year later, I can say that the hearing aids fitted by Jeff are working far better than any I have had in 50 years. His willingness to keep fine tuning, coupled with his knowledge and experience to tweak the software have enabled me to hear more completely and more accurately than I have for years. I particularly am enjoying the ability to have telephone conversations that are clear, understandable and satisfying."
